Brian and Dorothy Kern founded Kern Konstruction in September, 1970 as a new residential construction and remodeling contractor. Soon they extended into the commercial contracting area. This new sector grew rapidly, totally replacing the residential business. It is within this field of commercial contracting that Kern Konstruction, Inc. has found and developed its expertise. Their dedication to quality work quickly resulted in contracts from major franchises including McDonald’s, Kentucky Fried Chicken, Burger King and Holiday Inn.

As Kern Konstruction progressed into the 1980's they continued to grow, adding qualified staff and expanding their client base. In 1986 the firm developed a major relationship with the new Blockbuster Video Stores. Kern was an integral part of their concept, design, construction system and ultimate expansion. This long-term relationship resulted in more than 750 stores built or remodeled in several states and Canada.

The 1990's added a new dimension to Kern Konstruction. Boston Chicken, now Boston Market, brought Kern early into their franchise expansion plans. Contracts with AT&T Wireless stores for the Midwest followed shortly thereafter. During this period, Carson Kern joined the firm in a major executive position. This brought the family’s dedication and pride in quality workmanship into the second generation. In the late 1990's, Kern Konstruction acquired a unique new project: Lost Dunes Country Club in Michigan and played an integral part in the design and completion of a large clubhouse and guest cottages for one of America’s premier golf clubs.

In 2000 Kern Konstruction added Lettuce Entertain You Enterprises to the list of valued clients and has completed several of their restaurants with an exceptional level of dedication to exacting specifications. McDonald’s restaurants once again tapped into Kern’s expertise in the recent remodeling of many sites and expanding of current locations. Dorothy retired in 2008 from the business, yet she continues to offer her valuable insight.
